This section of our website will list
the major differences & requirements for the various version of
SCO OpenServer 5.0.7.
SCO OpenServer 5.0.7
Minimum System Requirements
CPU
- Supports all uni- and multi-processor
configurations compatible with Intel Multiprocessing Specification
(MPS) version 1.1 or 1.4.
- Intel Pentium, Pentium II, Pentium
III, Pentium 4, Celeron and Xeon
- AMD K5, K6, Duron, Athlon XP, Athlon
MP
- Many Cyrix processors
NOTE: Customized versions of OpenServer
will install and operate some applications on 386 or 486 class systems.
However SysIntegrators, LLC recommends any new servers to be installed
with the minimum of a Pentium 4 or XEON processor.
I/O Bus
- Industry Standard Architecture (ISA)
- Extended Industry Standard Architecture
(EISA)
- Micro Channel Architecture (MCA)
- Peripheral Component Interface (PCI)
- Universal Serial Bus (USB) 1.1 and
2.0 devices, including keyboards, mice, mass storage devices, and
USB hubs
RAM
- 64 MB recommended for most system
configurations
- 4 MB for customized systems (Point
of Sale/Embedded Machines)
- 128 MB recommend for desktop systems
NOTE: These are SCO minimum recommendations.
SysIntegrators, LLC recommends a minimum of 512MB RAM for proper system
operation, however for larger applications 1GB is recommended as a
minimum.
Disk Space
- Minimum of 400MB for the Host System
- Minimum of 550MB for the Desktop
System
- Minimum of 600MB for the Enterprise
System (add 500MB for Internet Services)
- Minimum of 15MB (30MB is preferred)
for the boot filesystem (/stand)
- 1 to 1.5 times as much space for
swap as there is RAM
- 17 MB per foreign language supported.
NOTE: OpenServer supports EIDE disks
as large as 137 GB, and SCSI or USB disks as large as 539 GB either
singly or in RAID arrays. Legacy formats such as ESDI are also supported,
and tailored, specific purpose versions of OpenServer can be loaded
in less than 100 MB of disk space. OpenServer supports 4 disk partitions
per drive with up to 7 filesystems per partition. Each filesystem
may be as large as 1 TB. The maximum file size is 2 GB.
Video
- 600x800 VGA with 256 colors (recommended
minimum)
- 1600x1200 with 24-bit color (maximum)
NOTE: SCO OpenServer will work with
a monochrome display on a 25x80 character screen with no video card
is available when the system console is directed through a serial
port to a character terminal.
Network
- OpenServer supports most 1Gbps, 100Mbps,
10Mbps and Token Ring NICs, and it does not require a network to
function
- A simple Host System does not need
a NIC (Network Interface Card) installed
- OpenServer supports TCP/IP, IPX/SPX,
NetBEUI (with optional AFPS product), NetBIOS, SMB, NFS, PPP, Microsoft
Network Neighborhood (with optional Merge product) and serial line
protocols.
Mouse/Pointing Device
- Scrolling (wheel)
- Infrared
- Touchpad
- Roller ball
NOTE: Pointing devices available in
serial, bus, PS/2 and USB configurations. Please note that no pointing
device (mouse) is required to operate an OpenServer system, unless
using the graphical desktop.
Keyboard
- All common keyboards, including USB,
are supported including many foreign language keyboards.
- A keyboard is required to install
OpenServer, but does not need to be present for OpenServer to function.
(If a serial terminal is being used for a console then the system
keyboard does not need to be present even during installation.)
Off-line Storage including Tape Drives,
Floptical, DVD, CDRW
- All densities of 5 1/4 and 3 1/2
floppy drives
- QIC, DAT, 8mm, and DLT tape drives
- Floptical drives
- LS 120 and 240 drives
- Jaz and Zip drives
- All speeds of SCSI, ATAPI (EIDE),
and USB CD and DVD readers and writers. To use a CD or DVD writer
a writer utility is necessary. A free CD writer is available in
the Skunkware software collection. Other CD and DVD writer utilties
are available from third parties.
NOTE: no offline storage device is required
by OpenServer to function, however either a bootable CD-ROM drive,
or a floppy drive and a non-bootable CD-ROM drive is required to install
the operating system.
Audio
- Many audio devices are available
for use with OpenServer when the Open Sound System (OSS) drivers
from 4Front Technologies are installed. The drivers are available
for an additional cost directly from 4Front, and come with a selection
of audio playback, recording, and equalization utilities.
- When used in conjunction with the
Merge add-on product, many of the Microsoft Windows audio and multimedia
playback utilities can be used, however acceptable performance may
not be possible with a CPU any slower than 350MHz.
Other Hardware
Many other peripheral devices are supported
by OpenServer, including:
- Many modems (internal and external)
operating from 56.2Kbps down to the slowest known (Note: win-modems
are not supported.)
- Most printers ranging from common
black and white or color inkjets to high speed departmental laser
printers (Note: win-printers are not supported.)
- Most monitors in all sizes ranging
from monchrome to full color high resolution models
- Many multiport serial/parallel setups
(includes remote consoles, but generally requires third party drivers)
- PCI serial and parallel ports
NOTE: All of the items listed under
"Other Hardware" are optional and not required by OpenServer to install
or execute most basic functions. For a complete list of supported
hardware, see SCO's Certified
and Compatible Hardware List.
