Caldera OpenLinux Workstation 3.1

Caldera® International announces the release of OpenLinux™ Workstation, release 3.1. Providing unparalleled ease of installation and configuration in a developer workstation product, Caldera has assembled the most popular development applications, tools, and utilities to answer the needs of most all Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) and corporate developers.

OpenLinux Workstation includes Borland's Jbuilder Foundation and Sun Microsystems' Forte Java development environments; and provides a full-function development system for the development of applications for Caldera's OpenLinux 3.1, OpenLinux Server 3.1, and Open UNIX® 8 with the Linux® Kernel Personality. This means that software applications can be built using OpenLinux Workstation, and be deployed with recompilation or porting to systems that extend into the enterprise. This product also features the development environment based on the GNU tool chain, a standard for Linux and other systems; and includes additional Open Source facilities for development such as the KDevelop IDE, vim, and Xemacs.

Caldera OpenLinux Workstation – Features and Benefits

Caldera's OpenLinux Workstation is the most complete and useful development platform for commercial developers wanting to take strategic advantage of Open UNIX 8 or OpenLinux. It includes the best mix of Open Source and commercial development tools, documentation, and support options available to enable the development of both standards-based and Caldera-certified applications. The product bundle includes DocView and an enhanced KHelpCenter browser that provide integrated, searchable access to the OpenLinux documentation, the standard Linux documentation, HOWTO files, and other documentation files included with the product. The standard documentation access facilities, such as man and info, are also fully supported.

Caldera's OpenLinux Workstation is also an ideal integrated client deployment platform for workstations, including the K Desktop Environment (KDE) and Sun Microsystems StarOffice 5.2, as well as the alternative desktop environment GNOME. In addition to the selection of software suites and packages suitable for professional developers, OpenLinux Workstation provides product features not found with Linux distributions, including:

  • Complete self-hosting - Self-hosting improves Linux security and performance; but importantly to developers, self-hosting means that there is compatibility between all binaries, libraries, and the compilers.
  • Out-of-the-box security - Caldera performs extensive software auditing and software rewriting to remove potential security breaches. You are provided with a secure system to start with and information about what was done to secure it.
  • Global Support - As the only global Linux company, Caldera provides worldwide sales and technical support as well as professional consulting services.
  • Default configurations - Caldera provides tested default configurations for the included server solutions.

OpenLinux Workstation is a Linux-based operating system product that provides out-of-the-box Internet-enabled business solutions such as a secure web server, file and print server, and network infrastructure servers. This secure, stable, and manageable Linux application platform saves you significant time and money in the installation, configuration, deployment, and management of business solutions by providing default working configurations, documented, out-of-the-box secure operation, deployment tools, and browser-based remote management and configuration utilities standard in each system.
